Subscription FAQ

Last Updated: September 15, 2026

Do I need a subscription to chat? Can I chat and interact with characters without subscribing?

No subscription is required. As long as your account has gems, you can chat and interact with characters, and you can create your own characters anytime (there is no limit on custom characters).

Gems spent on chats and generation can be earned for free through daily check-ins, missions, coin exchange, and social media events. In the app, go to "Profile" and tap "Tasks" to start earning gems.

The value of a subscription is that it gives you more gems each month and unlocks additional features (such as priority image generation, unlimited Inspirations, more Role Card slots, and Pinned Memory) — better value if you chat often.

What is the difference between the free and paid plans?

You can chat and create your own characters for free; paying mainly buys convenience. What you get extra:

  • Inspirations: only 3 on the free plan — unlimited from Standard up
  • Role Cards: 3 free, from 10 on paid plans, unlimited on the top tier
  • Pinned Memory: not available on the free plan; from Standard up, you can pin key character settings and plot points so the AI always remembers them
  • Some tiers also include: priority image generation, watermark-free downloads, and downloading and saving chat history

Your monthly free messages and bonus gems also increase with each tier.

Do I need a subscription to use longer memory?

No. Free users can also use up to 1M tokens of memory with supported models. The Max Memory Limit controls the maximum of Your Current Memory Usage. The more memory actually used, the more gems each message costs (even before you reach the limit) — adjust the limit as needed. Longer memory does not require a subscription, but Pinned Memory is a subscription benefit.

Why does Tipsy offer paid subscriptions?

Because GPU costs and the cost of developing advanced AI models keep rising, we introduced subscription plans to sustain development. They give the Tipsy tech team the funding to keep delivering smarter models and new features that improve your experience.

What is the difference between blue gems and red gems?

In one line: blue gems are the "monthly allowance that comes with a subscription", and red gems are "your own balance".

  • Blue gems: issued once a month with your subscription, valid only for the current month and do not carry over — they reset to your plan's allowance on your refresh date.
  • Red gems: gems you purchase or earn through check-ins, missions, coin exchange, or events are red gems. They remain valid permanently.
  • Order of use: chats and image/video generation spend blue gems first, then red gems.
  • Tip: use your monthly blue gems first during your subscription, or they will be cleared on the refresh date.

What happens if I run out of blue gems?

If you run out of blue gems, you can upgrade your subscription or buy additional gems. If you chat often, a subscription may offer better value through its monthly gem allowance and extra features. You can also earn red gems for free through daily check-ins, gem missions, coin exchange, and social media reward events.

Why is gem usage so different between models?

Because models differ greatly in computing power and cost. To serve different types of role-playing and chat users, we offer chat models at a range of price points, and we also offer low-cost models for everyday chats. The number of gems each model consumes reflects how much computing power it uses.

In addition to the model itself, three factors affect the cost of each message: the longer you chat, the larger your memory limit, and the longer the reply, the more it costs. The input box estimates the cost before you send, and every gem spent is listed in Gem History.

Is it worth upgrading from monthly to annual? How is my remaining monthly plan handled?

We strongly recommend upgrading from a monthly subscription to annual billing: you save up to 50% compared with paying monthly. When you upgrade, the adjustment is handled per channel — cash refund, price difference, or gem compensation — so you never overpay.

Same-tier monthly to annual: on the App Store and Google Play, the annual plan starts automatically when your monthly period ends (nothing is charged now); on RuStore, you pay the full annual price immediately and the unused part is compensated with gems.

How are the fees and benefits calculated when I upgrade to a higher tier?

Whether it is "monthly to monthly", "annual to annual", or "monthly to annual", the rules are the same: your new tier starts immediately — you get the new benefits right away (Inspirations, Role Card slots, Pinned Memory, priority image generation, etc.). Fees are settled per channel on a "refund or top-up as needed" basis:

  • App Store: charged the full new price now; Apple refunds the unused part of your old plan in cash on a prorated basis.
  • Google Play: you only pay the difference (calculated from the remaining period); your normal renewal at the new tier happens on your original billing date.
  • RuStore: you pay the full new price now and the old subscription is canceled; your blue gems are topped up to the new tier's full monthly allowance immediately.

How gems change: blue gems are switched to the new tier's monthly allowance (handled slightly differently per channel); red gems (from your purchases or events) are unaffected and kept permanently.

How do I downgrade to a lower tier?

You can downgrade at any time, but it does not take effect immediately: you keep your current (higher) tier benefits until the period ends, and the lower tier starts from the next cycle.

  • The current period is not refunded and no price difference is credited; from the next cycle, benefits and monthly blue gems follow the lower tier.
  • How: pick a lower tier on the subscription page in the app and confirm (you will see a "takes effect next cycle" notice); you can also change the plan in your store subscription settings.
  • RuStore exception: there is no in-app downgrade option — cancel your subscription first, then buy the lower tier after it expires.
  • Red gems you have earned are kept permanently; some settings (such as max reply length) return to default, while your memory limit is not affected.

How does my subscription renew?

Subscriptions with auto-renewal enabled renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless canceled. You can turn off auto-renewal at any time to prevent the next charge.

How do I cancel my subscription (turn off auto-renewal)?

You can cancel your subscription (turn off auto-renewal) at any time in your Apple ID or Google Play account settings. To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Steps for each platform:

  • App Store: open the "Settings" app on your iPhone/iPad → tap your Apple ID at the top → select "Subscriptions" → find and tap the subscription you want to cancel → tap "Cancel Subscription" and confirm.
  • Google Play: open the Google Play subscriptions page and sign in with the Google account you subscribed with → select your Tipsy subscription → tap "Cancel Subscription" and follow the prompts.
  • RuStore: open RuStore → go to your account page from the bottom menu → select "Subscriptions" → tap "Cancel Subscription" and confirm.

Please note: deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. You need to turn off auto-renewal in your account settings.

What happens after I cancel my subscription (turn off auto-renewal)?

Turning off auto-renewal does not stop the service immediately, and the current period is not refunded (that period has already been delivered). Your membership benefits stay active until the end of the current billing cycle (tier, monthly blue gems, and all features unchanged).

  • After the period ends: no further charges, your tier returns to Free, and the monthly blue gem allowance resets to zero — red gems you have earned are kept permanently and unaffected.
  • You can turn auto-renewal back on any time before it ends, with no gap in benefits (supported on App Store / Google Play).

How do I request a refund?

Refunds are handled per channel; Tipsy can only assist and cannot make the final decision:

  • App Store: Apple decides. Please apply at reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • Google Play: self-service in Google Play within 48 hours of purchase; after 48 hours, contact our support and we will help process it from the backend.
  • RuStore: submit a request via "Help & Feedback" for manual processing; it usually takes about 10 business days to arrive.

Can the subscription fee change in the future?

Yes. We reserve the right to change subscription fees at any time. We will notify you of any price changes via in-app announcements or other prominent channels. If you do not want to pay the new price, you can cancel before the change takes effect.

Why did my subscription payment fail?

Payments are processed by the store. The most common causes are: (1) insufficient balance or credit; (2) bank or payment-provider risk controls; (3) the payment method linked to your subscription has expired or is invalid; (4) your store account region does not match your payment method (for example, using a VPN or switching regions); (5) Family Sharing or parental-control restrictions. What to do: update your payment method in the store account and try again. If it shows "processing" or "pending", wait for the store to retry automatically — do not submit repeatedly in a short time (it may trigger risk controls or create multiple pending orders).

Why was I charged twice?

Don't worry — in most cases you were not actually charged twice. When you upgrade or switch plans, the store charges the new plan first and applies the old-plan adjustment a few days later; it looks like two charges, but it is one adjustment and needs no action.

If it really is two separate charges, we will help verify and resolve it. Please submit the following through "Help & Feedback": a screenshot of the order records (App Store / Google Play purchase history), a screenshot showing both charges, the approximate charge time, and your account UID.

My benefits disappeared after changing devices or reinstalling the app — what should I do?

  • First, confirm you are signed in with the same account you purchased with: benefits are tied to the store account (App Store / Google Play) you used at purchase.
  • The subscription page in the app has a "Restore" option — try that first.
  • If your account is correct and it still shows no subscription after restoring, submit a screenshot of your order number and your account UID via "Help & Feedback", and we will help verify it.

Where can I get more information and help with payments or subscriptions?

You can also reach us through "Help & Feedback" in the app. Please include a screenshot showing your order number, a payment confirmation screenshot, the approximate payment time, and your account UID — the more detail you provide, the faster we can verify and resolve your issue.
